Welcome to Freshman English, British Lit and AP English Lit!

This web site is provided for my classes in Freshman English, British Literature, and Advanced Placement English Literature here at East Lansing High School.

I am listing it as a combination site of all of my classes in order that I might better manage workflow.  It will also give all of my classes a common place to find information - including downloads of many class handouts.  High School is chaotic enough, so we might as well have an ordered cyberspace environment.

There are two places in particular on this web site that I invite every student and every parent to visit.  The first of these are the pages containing Class Assignments. These are separated appropriately into Freshman English, British Literature, and Advanced Placement English Literature.  This will be a general reminder of when homework is due in these particular classes and to help you stay on track in preparation for quizzes and tests.  Each page also contains the tentative syllabus for the class.

The second place are the pages containing Classroom Policies.  These will contain my policies on Expected Classroom Behavior,  Late Homework deadlines and grading adjustments that should be expected.

They will also address ethics in two growing problems of the Internet age - Plagiarism and the use of sites offering Condensed Formats.  All of my classes can expect to write a great deal.  It is important to keep current on assignments and plan accordingly - especially if extra-curricular activities may interfere with your academic workload.  Taking a short cut or presenting someone else's work as your own, is not worthy of members of any community - including our own learning community.

I am very excited about this school year and about our opportunities for shared ideas.

Stratford Trip
On Tuesday, October 5, students enrolled in both AP English Literature and in British Literature will have a field trip option to Stratford, Ontario to see Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.  Cost for performance ticket and transportation will be $55 per student.  More information will be forthcoming, but space is limited to the first 90 spaces sold, so please reserve your space as soon as possible.

It should also be noted that security restrictions at U.S. border crossings may change at any time.  While we have never experienced a problem with this trip in the past, for expediency's sake it might be worthwhile for students to carry a copy of their birth certificate.  Foreign-born students attending ELHS should carry their student visa or immigration cards.

Thanks ELEF!
A very special thank you to the East Lansing Education Foundation from which I received a grant for several new class sets of novels.  I don't want to get into a big political discussion by saying that "it takes a village to raise a child", but the truth is that we live in a pretty special community that always seems to manage to pull together in helping each other.  I am proud to be a teacher in this district!

Please get in touch with any questions or comments on my site.
